This sculptue in the Lyon, Musee Beaux Arts, by Lous Bertola (1927) is calle the "First Hunt of Adonis". In Greek mythology Adonis went hunting alone and was gored by a wild boar. His death is a key part of the Adonis myth where the tears of Aphrodite mingled with his blood to create the Anemone.
Adonis was the ,mortal lover of both Aphrodite and Persephone, and spent six moths of the year with Aphrodite and the other six months with Persephone. The reason for hos death is variously ascribed to jealousy by Ares who thought that Aphrodite was spending too much time with Adonis, or by Artemis who was seeking revenge for Aphrodite having killed Hippolytus.
